TECHNICAL GUIDES

Backup MX vs Email Continuity

Choose temporary incoming-mail queuing or a broader outage workspace based on your real requirements.

Package 1 · Backup MX

Secondary MX, temporary queuing during destination outages and automatic delivery on recovery. No mailbox pre-check, AntiSpam, Antivirus, content inspection or quarantine.

Package 2 · Email Protection

Primary MX gateway with configurable AntiSpam, Antivirus, sender-domain checks and quarantine. Publish only gate.securawall.com and configure a separate manual receiving target. Queuing and recovery remain included.

Optional SMTP Relay add-on

Add authorized outbound delivery to either Package 1 or 2 for the same domain. Separate add-on pricing, approval, server credentials, quotas, TLS and verified SPF apply. Customer-domain DKIM signing is optional and recommended. Incoming protection remains determined by the base package.

Start with the outcome you need

If you need accepted incoming messages to wait while your own server recovers, evaluate Backup MX. If staff must keep reading and replying during the outage, evaluate a continuity workspace. If the problem is recovering old mail after deletion, evaluate backup or archiving. These are distinct operational needs.

What SecuraWall provides

SecuraWall provides temporary incoming SMTP queuing and delivery attempts to the existing destination. The portal shows domain checks, queue status and collected delivery metadata. It does not provide hosted user mailboxes, outage webmail or outbound access as part of this Backup MX plan.

Cloud mail is a different decision

Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace already operate their own redundant mail infrastructure. Do not assume that every cloud-only domain needs another MX. Forwarding, receiving connectors and authentication policies must be evaluated. An additional route that is not configured correctly can introduce delivery problems.

A practical buying checklist

Ask whether you need queued delivery, immediate reading, historical restore or outbound sending. Then ask what happens when the queue expires, the destination rejects a recipient, storage fills or the service subscription ends. Compare equivalent capabilities and limits rather than a product name alone.

Choosing the right base package

Backup MX provides temporary queuing and delivery without content filtering. Choose Email Protection if you need incoming email inspection and quarantine. SMTP Relay is a separate optional add-on to either base package. Choose the documented service scope and configure the available controls. Do not interpret security filtering as a second required license.
