TECHNICAL GUIDES

Secure Email Gateway vs API-Based Email Security

Compare SMTP-path inspection with mailbox API approaches, including deployment, scope, quarantine and complementary use.

Package 1 · Backup MX

Secondary MX, temporary queuing during destination outages and automatic delivery on recovery. No mailbox pre-check, anti-spam, Antivirus, content inspection or quarantine.

Package 2 · Email Security

Primary MX gateway with configurable anti-spam, Antivirus, sender-domain checks and quarantine. Publish only gate.securawall.com and configure a separate manual receiving target. Queuing and recovery remain included.

Optional SMTP Relay add-on

Add authorized outbound delivery to either Package 1 or 2 for the same domain. Separate add-on pricing, approval, server credentials, quotas, TLS and verified SPF apply. Customer-domain DKIM signing is optional and recommended. Incoming protection remains determined by the base package.

Start with where each control operates

An SMTP secure email gateway evaluates mail passing through its route before onward delivery. API-based email security uses a supported mail platform’s APIs; depending on the product and permissions, it may evaluate mailbox content or perform remediation. These are architecture categories, not a universal effectiveness ranking. Some vendors combine approaches, and their exact inspection timing and capabilities differ.

Compare deployment requirements

A primary SMTP gateway usually requires MX and receiving-side configuration, plus a verified onward destination. API products commonly require tenant consent, API permissions and a supported platform. Review permissions, message access, processing location and revocation for either approach. Do not assume that a provider’s API integration supports every mail server or that an MX record alone prevents direct-delivery bypass.

Ask which messages are actually covered

A gateway sees messages that traverse it. Internal mailbox-to-mailbox traffic or messages delivered directly to the destination may bypass that route. An API product’s visibility depends on its platform, permissions and supported message types. Confirm coverage of internal mail, historical mail, attachments and post-delivery actions with the specific vendor. One architecture label does not establish those capabilities.

Separate directory APIs from mailbox inspection

SecuraWall uses directory connections to provision and maintain eligible quarantine users. Google sign-in supports eligible Google-connected users; Carbonio and Zimbra API connectors support their documented directory and corporate sign-in flows. These connections are not mailbox-content inspection, mailbox remediation or a Microsoft 365 security API integration. SMTP routing remains a separate configuration.

Evaluate response and continuity separately

Compare who can review a quarantined message, what release checks apply and how actions are audited. Also check destination-outage behavior: SecuraWall can queue accepted mail within finite limits, but it does not provide outage webmail or a hosted mailbox archive. Mailbox API remediation and SMTP retry queues solve different operational problems.

Use a practical evaluation checklist

Map your incoming route, required platforms and desired response actions. Confirm recipient validation, direct-delivery restrictions, supported analysis, incomplete-check handling, authentication, data retention and rollback. Test with mailboxes you own and inspect recorded outcomes. SecuraWall Email Security is a cloud SMTP SEG; select complementary controls where your requirements extend beyond that route.
