What Is a Secure Email Gateway? SMTP Inspection Explained

Understand how a secure email gateway inspects incoming SMTP mail, applies policies and forwards accepted messages to your existing mail platform.

Package 1 · Backup MX

Secondary MX, temporary queuing during destination outages and automatic delivery on recovery. No mailbox pre-check, anti-spam, Antivirus, content inspection or quarantine.

Package 2 · Email Security

Primary MX gateway with configurable anti-spam, Antivirus, sender-domain checks and quarantine. Publish only gate.securawall.com and configure a separate manual receiving target. Queuing and recovery remain included.

Optional SMTP Relay add-on

Add authorized outbound delivery to either Package 1 or 2 for the same domain. Separate add-on pricing, approval, server credentials, quotas, TLS and verified SPF apply. Customer-domain DKIM signing is optional and recommended. Incoming protection remains determined by the base package.

A security checkpoint on the incoming route

A secure email gateway, or SEG, sits on the SMTP route before the receiving mail system. It evaluates messages against enabled security policies, then accepts, quarantines or rejects them as appropriate. A cloud SEG provides that checkpoint as a hosted service. It does not necessarily replace mailboxes, provide webmail or inspect messages already stored in a mailbox.

How incoming mail reaches the gateway

For SecuraWall Email Security, publish gate.securawall.com as the domain’s only MX and configure the real receiving server separately. The gateway must never use those same MX records to discover its onward destination: that would route mail back to itself. Verify ownership, the real target and receiving policy before changing MX. Restrict direct delivery at the destination where appropriate, because an MX change alone cannot prevent a sender from connecting to the real server.

What the inspection can cover

Configured controls include spam scoring, antivirus, supported static attachment and Office macro checks, QR and image analysis, impersonation signals and click-time link protection. Coverage depends on enabled policies, supported formats and processing limits. A missing detection is not proof that every check ran. Encrypted contents may remain uninspected, and static analysis does not execute attachments in a dynamic sandbox.

How a decision becomes a delivery outcome

Accept allows onward delivery, quarantine makes a message available to authorized reviewers, and reject declines it according to policy. Gateway queue acceptance is different from receiving-server acceptance and from inbox placement. Temporary destination failures can leave accepted mail queued for retries until recovery or expiry. A sender that receives a temporary refusal before acceptance must retry from its own system.

Who manages messages and users

IT Admins manage their authorized domains and policies. Quarantine users review messages addressed to their verified primary account and linked aliases. Manual creation, CSV and supported directory connectors manage quarantine access; they do not configure SMTP routing. Corporate passwords are checked through the selected sign-in mechanism and are not copied into a local quarantine password database.

Choose the service for the route you need

Email Security is the primary inspection service. Backup MX is a secondary standby route for temporary outage queuing, without content scanning or personal quarantine. SMTP Relay is a separate outbound add-on that requires an active base service for the same domain. Compare the actual deployment and service limits rather than assuming that the word gateway includes every email security function.
